Municipal Property Transfer Tax (IMT)

IMT, formerly known by the acronym SISA, has captured significant national media attention following the announcement of new support measures for home acquisitions. Specifically targeting younger citizens (under 35 years of age), these measures took effect on 1 August 2024, stemming from amendments to Article 9 of the CIMT (IMT Code) under Decree-Law No. 48-A/2024. While not the first technical exemption, it is the first to grant individuals an exemption from paying both IMT and Stamp Duty, subject to certain conditions.


Note: Much like the Municipal Property Tax (IMI), IMT is a tax whose revenue benefits the local municipalities.
